Agile Mentoring Program

Becoming an Agile Change Agent

AMP teaches you how to teach and mentor others!

“There is no end state when transitioning to Agile. It’s a continuous
journey.” -Mike Cohn

Cell Division
Instructor - Explain to the Cohort that they should consider
participating in a Meetup or some sort of Community of Practice after
graduating and, in order to gel well as a Cohort, they need to get to
know each other. Make sure the Cohort understands this is the purpose
of the exercise (and that it is also a good exercise to do with their
Teams). Click on the top-right graphic for more details on how to
conduct the exercise or go to page 155 in the book for the
instructions.

Here are the recommended statements to read in each round of the exercise:

• I enjoy time alone.
• My happiest times are when I’m in nature.
• I like to make things with my hands.
• I thrive being around people.
Instructor - Invite the class to look around and see where their
teammates stand after each statement is read.

Reduce duration - Take from 13 weeks down to 6 to 10
Eliminate "Trick questions" - Perception based on difficult types of
questions and exact wording being required
Validate knowledge - We want our people to learn the material over
being good "test takers"

Instructor - Encourage the class for a couple minutes to create their
own. Here are some that another Team did:
• I thrive in micromanaged environments. • I feel more of an
accomplishment working individually than as a team. • I feel
comfortable providing direct feedback. • I need time to think about
something before I work on it. • I am frustrated when there is a lack
of order. • I think agile is going to work for us. • I don’t mind
bending the rules to get things done. • I am comfortable using agile
even if it lessens my personal influence or control.
Note: Success with Constellation happens when you ask this question
and then let them talk with one another, “Where were you surprised
about the shape of a constellation?”

self-organization and cross-functional behavior because it reveals a

The intention is to learn about the skills, experience and knowledge

PART ONE - A New Operating System
Chapter 1 - The Rise and Fall of Motivation 2.0

Discuss the Case Study of Microsoft's Encarta vs. Wikipedia
Definition: Motivation 1.0 = Prehistoric humans worked on basic OS of
eating, surviving and reproducing. Motivation 2.0 = Rewards &
Punishments
Motivation 2.0 failing now due to 3 reasons: New types of
organizations; we're humans, not rational machines; work today is more
heuristic and less algorithmic

Chapter 2/2a - Seven Reasons Carrots and Sticks (Often) Don't Work ...
and the Special Circumstances When They Do

Motivation 2.0 has 7 unintended negative consequences: Less intrinsic
motivation; less performance; less creativity, less altruistic
behavior, more cheating, shortcuts and unethical behavior; more
addiction to rewards; more short-term thinking

Chapter 3 - Type I and Type X

Definition: Self-Determination Theory (SDT) = People have 3 universal
psychological needs: Competence, Autonomy, Relatedness. When met
people are happy!
Definition: Type X = eXtrinsic (behavior driven by external
rewards/punishments - M2.0); Type I = Intrinsic (driven by "AMP" /
M3.0)

PART TWO - The Three Elements (Autonomy, Mastery, Purpose)
Chapter 4 - Autonomy

Autonomy means choice -- choosing our own path based on our own
internal motivations, not based on coercion or external influence
Autonomy is important in 4 key areas: task, time, technique, team

Set a reminder on your computer or mobile phone to go off at forty
random times in a week. Each time your device beeps, write down what
you’re doing, how you’re feeling, and whether you’re in “flow.” Record
your observations, look at the patterns, and consider the following
questions:

Which moments produced feelings of “flow”? Where were you? What were
you working on? Who were you with?
Are certain times of day more flow-friendly than others? How could you
restructure your day based on your findings?
How might you increase the number of optimal experiences and reduce
the moments when you felt disengaged or distracted?
If you’re having doubts about your job or career, what does this
exercise tell you about your true source of intrinsic motivation?

#8 As you think about your own best work, what aspect of autonomy has
been most important to you? Autonomy over what you do (task), when you
do it (time), how you do it (technique), or with whom you do it
(team)? Why? How much autonomy do you have at work right now? Is that
enough?
#9 Would initiatives like FedEx Days, 20 percent time, and ROWE work
in your organization? Why or why not? What are one or two other ideas
that would bring out more Type I behavior in your workplace?
#10 Describe a time recently when you’ve experienced “flow.” What were

During the year-long "Phase 1" of the Transformation, you hired ten

Chapter 1. Limits of Hierarchy in a Faster-Moving World

Discuss excerpt: An organization's capacity to innovate & win stalls
or dies because of political and social problems. People are loath to
take chances without permission from superiors *and* people cling to
their habits and fear loss of power and stature.
Have you seen this in your workplace? What have you done to address
these problems?
What are the two systems that comprise the "dual operating system?"
Why are they both needed to accelerate change?

Chapter 2. Seizing Opportunities with a Dual Operating System

The Five Principles: Many people drive change through the dual OS of
the (1) Hierarchy; and, (2) Network. The system is a *partnership* not
an enhanced hierarchy.
Discuss: Have you gotten to be a part of the Eight Accelerators (see
ADM103 Prezi)?

Chapter 3. The Stakes: A Cautionary Tale

Discuss: How would using a Dual OS make a difference in the case study
of the Professional Services firm?

Chapter 4. Leadership and Evolution

"Management is *not* Leadership." How are Kotter's definitions
different from what is used in your company?
What would you do to keep the Network side of the system from being
replaced by the Hierarchy side if you were running a new company?

Chapter 5. The Five Principles and Eight Accelerators in Action

Principle #2: "It's all about volunteers." Why?
Accelerators 6-8: "Wins, wins and more wins!" Why continuous wins?

Imagine you were hired a year ago to be the Agile Transformation
Director for a 30-year-old Silicon Valley company with Developers all
over the world. The Developers had no previous Agile experience and
the Management used traditional Waterfall approaches in mindset and
methodology.
During the year-long "Phase 1" of the Transformation, you hired ten
contract Agile Coaches to focus exclusively on "Doing Agile" (i.e.,
focusing on only doing the mechanics of Agile) instead of "Being
Agile" (i.e., changing to an Agile mindset). At the end of the year,
you ran out of budget and were tasked with the Vision to "Accelerate
and advance" the Transformation to do the necessary Agile mindset
change in "Phase 2" without any further assistance of your
contractors.

Chapter 6. Relentlessly Developing & Role Modeling Urgency

Discuss: "Nothing is as powerful in opening masses of minds, supplying
relevant information, drawing out passion, and then creating a great
sense of urgency around a big competitive opportunity than role
modeling."
Discuss: This activity works best when no one tries to project manage it.

Chapter 7. The Big Opportunity ("TBO")

Discuss: "Great urgency that drives people in a dozen different
directions achieves nothing." Which Scrum value is in play here?
Definition: "TBO" (The Big Opportunity) "is both rational in light of
available data and emotionally compelling to people inside an
organization." Summary: TBOs must be rational, emotionally compelling,
and memorable.
Discuss: What TBO exists in your company ... or your life?
Review: Creating the "Big Opportunity' Statement characteristics (p. 137)

Chapter 8. Getting Started: Q&A

Discuss: What Q&A set(s) surprised you?

Chapter 9. The (Inevitable) Future of Strategy

Discuss: The book says we need a whole new notion of "strategy." What
do you understand Kotter to mean by this? How often should we revisit
our organizational strategy?

Appendix A: Can your "Best Practices" save you? An assessment.

Class: Any discussion points?
