TO LEARN: How to Draw

Drawing

1. Take a crash course in general drawing. Start with pen and ink, as this will help you to stop yourself from erasing to draw "perfect" images. Get quality instruments as they really do make a difference. I use a Lamy fountain pen. There's a great book called sketching your favorite subjects in pen and ink. Try others, there are tons out there.

2. Get tracing paper and start by tracing buildings you like. Make sure to trace from photographs and not from drawings. Tracing from a picture is a good first step. Trace at least once every day for three months.

3. After 3 months, move to copying photos instead of tracing them. Copying from a photo is easier than copying from the outside world. Do at least one drawing a day. Start carrying a pocket sketchbook around.

4. Little by little you'll learn to control the pen. When you do, you can move onto the regular old pencil, which is much harder. Stick with black and white images for at least a year and then you can incorporate color and other techniques.

5. Allow yourself to make ugly drawings, it's OK! You are just practicing. It took me 5 years to get to a drawing level that didn't embarrass me a little bit. The trick is to enjoy it.
