Donald Trump Poisons the World

As much as I deplore Trump and his supporters, there is a fascinating duality to his presidency. He is a hypocritical, narcissistic, self-delusional man who holds a Dorian Gray mirror to America to force us to confront our own hypocrisy, narcissism and self-delusion. He is the emperor with no clothes who forces us to see that we also all have no clothes.

If the majority of Americans are so concerned about global warming that they want to stay in the Paris accord, why has the average size of a new house in the US increased by 1000 square feet since the 1980’s? Why are sales of small cars plummeting, while SUVs are the only automotive market segment that is increasing? How many letter writers this morning are responding to Brooks’ column from their houses in New Jersey and Connecticut before they get in those SUVs and drive, alone, to a job 30, 40, or 50 miles away (yes, I am one)? How many of us whine and moan if our office at that job is not 70 degrees 12 months of the year?

Just as thinking Americans see Trump as a whining child, so the rest of the world sees the US as a child, using a disproportionate share of the world’s resources while whining that the Paris Accord is “unfair” to the richest, fattest, most spoiled society in human history. What will happen now is that the rest of the world, probably led by China, will marginalize the US, and as we shed allies and retreat further within ourselves, we will become another historical also-ran. Just like Trump.
