Measured Responses

Laycock, HenryView Profile. The Globe and Mail [Toronto, Ont] 31 July 2006: A.12.

The people of Canada have every right to expect from their Prime Minister a categorical denunciation of the war crimes now being committed by Israel -- in particular, of the terrible massacre of women and children in the village of Qana (Israeli Missile Strike In Lebanon Kills At Least 54 -- on-line edition, July 30). If Stephen Harper is unable to deliver on this, he has no right to criticize or condemn anyone. Indeed, he has no right to continue to be our Prime Minister.

Responsibility for the deaths of Lebanese children in Qana, falls primarily on Hezbollah and its backers, Syria and Iran, not on Israel. If a terrorist organization occupies one's country, then one is responsible for either working to eliminate it or leaving. In the case of children, the parents are responsible for their evacuation. If the terrorist organization then attacks a neighbouring country, it thereby signs the death sentence of any remaining civilians. The attacked country has a moral right and obligation to militarily reduce the enemy to impotence at minimum cost to its citizens.

Any ceasefire serves only to embolden the terrorists and their sponsors, and thereby causes many more innocent deaths in the future. If Israel is guilty of anything, it's guilty of not using all of its military might -- in the name of saving innocent lives -- to swiftly annihilate the Hezbollah threat in Lebanon. History demonstrates that this is the only road to peace, especially when confronted by bloodthirsty killers.

The fact that many Western leaders and commentators are focused on chastising Israel and calling for an immediate ceasefire indicates a widespread epidemic of intellectual and moral bankruptcy.

Surely this latest massacre in Lebanon must make Stephen Harper re-examine his position that the Israeli bombing in Lebanon is a "measured response." Unfortunately, the war-mongering "American poodle" seems incapable of calling for a ceasefire. Come out of hiding, Mr. Harper; be a leader and call for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon.

How long must this go on? Just reverse the story -- if this had happened in Israel and 34 Israeli children had died, how would the world react?

Just how many innocent civilians must die before our spineless Prime Minister will condemn the actions of Israel in Lebanon? A family of seven Canadians taking shelter in a home was massacred, a Canadian serving with the United Nations was murdered, and now at least 34 children have been slaughtered in a building where they were taking shelter -- all by Israeli "precision-guided" missiles. Stephen Harper's silence is deafening.

I am fed up with those who lament the deaths of large numbers of "innocent civilians" in Lebanon while dismissing the deaths of a much smaller number of Israelis as insignificant. Let's get real about who started this conflict and this discrepancy in numbers of victims.

The Israeli government makes every effort to protect its citizens by building fortified bomb shelters in civilian communities and stationing military installations as distant from civilian centres as possible. Hezbollah not only fails to provide for the protection of non-combatants, but is only too eager to provide more "martyrs" for propaganda purposes. Civilians, particularly children, seem to be expendable in the cause of wiping Israel off the Mideast map.

Instead of cursing Israel, the Lebanese should be focusing their wrath on their government and Hezbollah for getting them into this conflict, and failing to protect them.
