A video of Zach talking about Michigan hockey and also about how much he loves Dylan, and Dylan talking about Zach. And their friendship: Michigan Hockey: Create the Difference Episode 1

Dylan Larkin and Zach Werenski rekindle an old friendship in Ann Arbor

It’s not too difficult to find Zach Werenski and Dylan Larkin together. Whether they’re riding bikes around Ann Arbor, sitting together in class or playing Ping-Pong in South Quad, the two roommates aren’t easily separated.

As two of the top hockey talents in the NCAA, Larkin and Werenski are being heavily relied on to bring the Michigan hockey team back to its former prominence. The pair of talented freshmen bring innate chemistry and a passionate work-ethic to a team looking to find its way into the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2012.

Between two prestigious programs in the NTDP and Michigan, Larkin and Werenski are back to being best buds. They attended Drake’s and Lil’ Wayne’s concert over the summer, and still jam to similar musical selections in their dorm room.

Outside that door, the longtime duo takes its hockey sticks and a tennis ball into the hall. Walking up and down the corridor, Larkin and Werenski pass the furry, yellow ball back and forth, off the wall and shoot it into their room when they’re finished.

They snack on their favorite foods while catching NHL action on their TV. Larkin jokes that Werenski loves his chocolate chip cookies, but only if they’re the soft ones.

Werenski claims Larkin is typically more competitive than he is. They play Ping-Pong two to three times a week, and Werenski used to get the best of Larkin.

“At the beginning it was me, but he’s coming back for sure,” Werenski said. “He’s quite the Ping-Pong player now.”

"When he had a chance to come here," said Larkin, "I did some good persuading and got him here. I thought he'd help our team."

Larkin grinned with that understatement.

"I always knew Dylan was coming here, and I liked Michigan," said Werenski. "It definitely helps to have someone who's that close of a friend and to be in the room with him. They told me that was one of the options before I came here. They said, 'You can room with Dylan if you want.' That definitely made it easier, and I was happy about that."

Everything's in order around their place.

"I'm kind of neat freak," said Werenski. "I like to keep things neat and it's not too hard."

Larkin smiled and nodded in agreement. Their one significant argument came over keeping a common area clean.

"He's been easy to get along with," said Werenski. "There was one time I got on him, but it wasn't anything crazy."

Larkin said, "It was about our dresser. I had my laptop, a bunch of wrappers and water bottles on something we share between our beds."

Werenski realized he might have been excessive and said, "Maybe I was a little mad that day and just took it out on him."

Werenski would like to someday hook up on their fourth team together.

"When I saw that he was drafted by the Wings that became my goal," said Werenski. "It was kind of cool sitting on the couch with my parents and seeing he got picked. We talked about how awesome it would be to get drafted by the Wings. But there's no control you have over it."

Zach Werenski watched through the Plexiglas along the boards at Joe Louis Arena as his best friend, Dylan Larkin, scored a goal in his NHL debut with the Detroit Red Wings. It was a pinch-me moment for Larkin, only 19, who is playing for the team he and Werenski rooted for all their lives.

"Opening night, I was in seats on the glass, and I texted Dylan saying I was there," said Werenski. "And after he scored and had his celebration, he kind of looked at me from the box. He smiled and put his head down. To see his success and how happy he was in that moment was pretty unbelievable.

"He's been my best friend for over 10 years now, and it was special to be there and see that smile on his face. I'll always remember how happy he was scoring his first NHL goal."

Larkin and Werenski, teammates since playing together for the powerhouse Belle Tire travel team in elementary school, were embarking on their freshman seasons at Michigan one year ago, sharing a South Quad dorm room and their dreams.
